Drivers can use the fastest chargers to charge an electric car, but should they?

30 Jan 2023 10 mins to read
There are times when EV drivers need to fill their car starts immediately, whether on a long haul to another city or country, or in an emergency, and don't have time to invest in charging.
Drivers can use the fastest chargers to charge an electric car, but should they?
Summary:Is that smart when you need to get out fill up electric cars quickly? Or is this idea left to car cultures with internal combustion engines?

The fastest forms of charging

The fastest forms of charging

For drivers who are on the go, fast charging is offered. There are two types: AC charging. This provides more power (about 43 kW) and a DC version. There are also various references to AC and DC power supplies. They are mainly located in Europe.

Continuous fast chargers can charge an electric car to 80% in 30 minutes. Most chargers provide an electric vehicle's alternating current, which is converted to direct current in the vehicle. Continuous power fast chargers get their name because they charge the vehicle directly from a continuous current source. The car does not need to convert energy to accelerate the charge. Level 1 provides a maximum power output of 80kW at 50-1000VDC and DC level 2 provides a maximum output of 400kW at 50-1000VDC It is also more expensive to use and will not work in all vehicles .

DC fast chargers are easy to find and can be used for fast charging. However, only refueling is possible, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Why you might be ditching the fastest chargers

Why you might be ditching the fastest chargers

Fast chargers are detrimental to electric vehicle batteries. While they can be used occasionally, regular use of DC fast chargers can cut battery life in half. Most EV drivers report that their cars are maintenance free and buy a new car before the end of battery life (about 150,000 km), drivers who regularly use fast chargers may be able to replace the precision battery sooner than expected.

With a DC fast charger at hand, you can quickly get back to driving. However, fast chargers are a luxury item and drivers should treat them accordingly.

Why you might not want to fill up an electric car at all

Why you might not want to fill up an electric car at all

Drivers of combustion-engine vehicles are used to emptying and then completely filling their fuel tanks, but charging an electric car is like spot charging. Free charger at work? Stay there for an hour. How about a 45 minute workout at your favorite restaurant? Charging an electric vehicle to 100% or completely discharging it will shorten battery life. So anyone who insists on 100% charging at all times is essentially paying the price of battery destruction.  EV is not only unnecessary, but can be costly in many ways.

Definitely, with more people becoming environmentally-conscious, it's only a matter of time.
I think it's all about personal preference and what you're willing to sacrifice for convenience.

Some people don't mind waiting a few extra minutes for a slower charge to ensure the longevity of their battery.
It varies depending on where you live and the electrician you hire, but on average it could cost anywhere from $1,000-$2,500.
Why bother buying an expensive electric car if you're not going to take advantage of the fastest charging options?
What's the point of having a fast car that can't be charged fast though?
But what about people who can't afford to buy electric cars and rely on gas-powered cars for transportation?

Yeah, but have you ever been in a situation where you had to make a sudden stop for a charge and the only option was a slow charger?
Are there any brands of electric car batteries that are known for lasting longer despite using fast chargers?
Do you think electric cars will eventually replace gas-powered cars as the norm?
Has anyone had any personal experiences with this issue?

Does using a slower charger really make that big of a difference in the lifespan of the battery?
Yes, it's possible, but it could take up to 20 hours to fully charge your car.
Yeah, I use the fastest charger all the time and my battery seems fine so far.
There will always be a transition period where people will have to make adjustments, but in the long run, the benefits of electric cars will outweigh the costs.
